If you've been trying and failing to access your Facebook and Instagram accounts this afternoon, you're not alone. It appears that social media apps are both down and not working with thousands of bugs. The gremlins seem to have started at 3:00pm but the outage is still ongoing and there is no word on when it will be fixed.
Downdetector, which monitors outages around the world, shows more than 90,000 reports of Facebook being down. Instagram has over 16,000 reports, making it one of the biggest issues for Meta (which owns both platforms) in years.
It's unclear what caused the problem, but many Facebook and Instagram users have taken to rival social site X (formerly Twitter) to vent their anger.
One user named Crito said: "Facebook down. Can't access my account," while another named Hickman added: "Facebook down/Instagram down everything on meta down.
It's very rare for Meta apps to have such a major issue and hopefully, the tech team will try their best to fix the bug as soon as possible.
